The objective of this unit was to learn about learn more about waves. more specifically, about sound waves. to do so, each group designed three or more musical instruments. Each student got to design either a string, wind or chime instrument, and each instrument had to be able to play a full octave. to make our instruments, we used the components of wavelengths and frequencies, and used those to calculate the measurements of the instrument. we also made a song at the end that had to have something to do with a physics concept. below is a document containing everything you need to know about our instruments.
another element of this project was creating a song, and the lyrics of that song are included below. we created a "parody" of the high school musical song "work this out" and put a physics twist on it. we recreated the song so that it was about the physics concept, work.
conclusion:
Overall, I really enjoyed this project because i liked being able to allow my creativity to take over. this project had guidelines, and mine was to have a string instrument that would play a full octave. other than those guidelines, this project was extremely open, and we could approach it however we liked. i really liked that because what i was creating was vastly different than the person's next to me. it made this project feel very original and fun.
I feel that the skill area that i excelled in was work ethic and productivity. due to the fact that i really enjoyed this project, i was always eager and ready to work on it. also, I had a set idea of what my instrument would be, and i fully planned it out before getting to work. this organization helped me to stay on task and get the work done.
a skill area that my group and i could have done better on is time management. we hadn't realized our limited time, and we were still working on our project on the day of the presentation. i think that we could have fixed this by making a gantt chart or something of the sort, to organize our tasks and to make sure that we did them all in a timely manner. then, instead of being crunched on time, we could have had extra time to add to our project and make it stand out.
all in all, this was one of my favorite projects, and i can't wait to see if i use this knowledge in the future.
